Appearing recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live, DeGeneres reported that she is no fan of weed, but ended up driving her ailing wife Portia de Rossi to hospital after earlier consuming three infused drinks.
DeGeneres recounted how Portia , in March, said she wasn’t feeling well and planned to go to bed at 7:30 p.m. On the recommendation of Chelsea Handler, that same night DeGeneres had decided to try some cannabis drinks.
“They have CBD or THC, I don’t know what the good thing is,” she told Kimmel. After drinking one, she said she didn’t feel anything, so drank two more and took two melatonin sleep pills before heading off to bed.
“I’m laying in bed and I realize she’s not in bed. I say, ‘Are you okay?’” DeGeneres said, adding that Portia was moaning.
“I get out of bed and she’s on the ground on all fours and I say, ‘You’re not okay… unless you’re playing Twister by yourself, you’re not okay.’”
DeGeneres then rushed Portia to the local emergency room. Saying her adrenaline must have kicked in, she admitted it might not have been safe to drive after consuming the drinks and pills. “I shouldn’t be saying any of this.”
Unsure of what was wrong with Portia, however, she was admitted to hospital and had an emergency appendectomy and the following day, DeGeneres said.
In a great deal of pain, DeGeneres recounts how Portia started offering up tickets to her show in exchange for medication. Of course, the ploy didn’t work, with nursing staff holding firm to the medication schedule.
DeGeneres told Kimmel she doesn’t celebrate 4/20 — for which he suggested Highnukkah might be a great alternate name — because she’s not a fan of weed and how it makes her feel.
“I don’t partake in the whacky tobaccy or I’m not a doobie brother,” she quipped, noting that the one time she tried gummies to help her sleep, she felt like she was going to die. “Honestly, I thought I was going to die…. I was so freaked out,” she said.
Despite truly disliking pot and the way it makes her feel, she says people are constantly making recommendations on what she should try. “’Oh it’s nothing like that,” she told Kimmel the recommendations inevitably include.
“Everyone has a thing that if you try this, it’s different than the other. So, no, I don’t like any of that,” she noted.
As for Portia, DeGeneres told Kimmel “she’s much better now.”
