Mercedes-Benz Gives Customers All the Color Options, Even Colors They Don’t Make
Mercedes-Benz expands its Designo program to include any color from its history portfolio, and from other manufacturers.
Mercedes-Benz's Designo program is the velvet rope to the VIP room where customers receive Duesenberg levels of luxury in choosing exterior colors, types of leather, headliners, and interior accents on their new car. This week, Mercedes announced a further expansion of its Designo program that gives customers the option to choose any color in its history catalog going back to the 1950s. This program expansion is a power move to get a piece of Rolls-Royce and Bentley's ultra-luxury market.
The Designo Manufaktur program is available on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, E-Class, and AMG GT. When Mercedes says any color, they mean any color from any model used in the last 70-odd years. That also applies to the interior with more options in leather with contrasting stitching color combinations.
Exterior colors are not exclusive to Mercedes either as customers can also request a color from another manufacturer so long as that color is "upon confirmed availability." So, in theory, a customer could order an S-class in Lamborghini Verde or Porsche GT3 Lava Orange. Perfect for the luxury car buyer who has grown weary of seeing silver and black in the country club parking lot.
The Designo Manufaktur expansion includes a unique program just for G-Class SUV, providing customers with a palette of 34 exterior colors and 54 interior upholsteries options creating millions of possible color combinations. Mercedes S-Class and Maybach customers can customize the headliner with any color or pattern, and Mercedes does mean any. The sky is the limit, apparently.
To celebrate this announcement, Mercedes debuted two rolling examples to stir the imagination of the possibilities Designo can provide: a Mercedes S 63 Cabriolet dressed in a Deep Green from its heritage portfolio matched with light Drown Nappa leather, and an AMG E 63 S wagon wearing a Steel Blue that was exclusive only to the Sprinter Van with white stitching to contrast the black Nappa leather interior.
Mercedes did not disclose how much this service adds to the vehicle's price, but it's safe to assume it's going to be significantly higher than a destination fee.
