A mundane Google search term has left users astounded by its results when searching by image.

Twitter user Jason Pargin raised the issue in a tweet on Friday, which has since amassed thousands of retweets, quote tweets and likes. According to Jason, many users who search the seemingly innocuous term "desk ornament" via images are then shown rows of pictures containing Nazi memorabilia.

Jason said: "Question: Go to Google Image Search and look for "desk ornament." Do you get a bunch of Nazi stuff as the top results?".

Many Twitter users who replied to the tweet said they were experiencing the same results. The ECHO's attempt at the image search also yielded the same imagery.

Some questioned what may have happened for these results to appear.

The most likely hypothesis seems to be a lack of filtering in the search engine results or a circumvention of the algorithm to bring these visuals up to the top of the ranking.

Others urged users to inform Google of the issue.

Google provides forms for request to remove an image from search results and for report apparently illegal content. The search engine indicates in its regulations that content that is offensive or incites hatred is restricted or prohibited, depending on the circumstances.

The ECHO has approached Google for comment.
